What is Japan METI filing?

This is a mandatory safety certification for electrical products. Japanese buyers must register and declare with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) within one month after purchasing goods. Electrical and electronic products within the DENAN catalog sold in the Japanese market

All must pass PSE certification. DENAN in Japan divides electrical and electronic products into two categories: specific electrical products, including 115 types of products; Non specific electrical products, including 338 types of products.

Specific electrical products must be inspected by a third-party certification agency authorized by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for product and factory testing equipment. A PSE certification certificate must be issued, with a validity period of 3 to 7 years, and the PSE diamond logo must be affixed to the product.

Non specific electrical products require self inspection and declaration to prove product compliance, and the PSE circular symbol should be affixed to the product

Japanese METI filing process

1. Notification of business, understood as a declaration from a Japanese importer, which includes manufacturer information, product information, and signing date

2. The approval certificate issued by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan requires importers to obtain the PSE certificate and file it with METI in order to issue this approval certificate.

3. Japanese buyers must register with the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) within one month after purchasing goods, and must have a Japanese business company registered in Japan to apply for registration with METI.

2. Without importer qualifications

METI Validity Period:

Validity period is 3 years (industry default validity period is long-term)

Special attention:

Starting from February 1, 2019, lithium batteries and portable battery packs for portable appliances with an energy density of 400Wh/L or above must be marked with a circular PSE symbol on the product and meet the requirements of J62133 (H28) (JISC8712 (2015) or IEC62133 (2012) in Table 9 or Table 12, and then apply for METI filing.
